Teeth Whitening Questions

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a bleaching process that helps remove stubborn stains and lighten discolouration of enamel - the part of the tooth which we can see. Whitening is among one of the most popular dental cosmetic procedures because it can greatly improve how your teeth look and make you feel more comfortable.

How does teeth whitening work?

After moulding your mouth trays, the next step is to carefully place the KAPOW! Smiles Whitening Gel into your now custom fitted trays (included in your kit). Once inserted over your teeth, the active ingredient in the gel (18% carbamide peroxide) starts to work. Oxygen then enters into the enamel and dentine, which in turn breaks down the stains inside the tooth. The structure of the tooth is not changed but only the enamel of the tooth that becomes to appear whiter. The more treatments you do, the whiter your teeth will become.

Is there anyone who should not whiten their teeth?

We recommend teeth whitening only for those 16 and older - Any younger, check with your dentist first. If you are under 18 only do so under parent supervision.

It is also advised not to use teeth whitening kits if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have periodontal disease or your gums that are in poor condition
  • Have Overly Sensitive teeth
  • Suffer from tooth decay
  • Wear traditional metal or ceramic braces
  • Have jaw problems.
  • Have undergone any recent oral surgery (last 30 days)
  • Have pain caused by the need for a filling or root canal
  • Suffer from colitis
  • If you are unsure you should always consult your dentist first.

Does teeth whitening cause any side effects?

By following the product instructions you should experience minimal to no side effects. The key is to not use too much whitening gel in your mouth trays, thus preventing any gel from touching your gums. It is also very important to keep track of the time and not exceed 45 minutes.

Some users may experience sensitivity when whitening their teeth, this is a normal and expected side effect and differs from person to person. Our whitening kit contains a desensitising agent which will help reduce sensitivity if this occurs. If your teeth do become sensitive, we recommend whitening your teeth every second or third day instead of daily. Sensitivity should always stop within 1-2 days after completing your treatment however if you still feel sore or irritated after 3 days we recommend you visit your dentist for a check up.

If you use too much whitening gel which cause some to cover your gums, they may become temporarily white. This is nothing to worry about and will return to normal usually within a couple of hours.

Can i whiten crowns, craps, fillings or veneers?

Teeth whitening gels will NOT whiten your crowns, caps, fillings or veneers. Whitening gel will only whiten enamel.

    KAPOW! Smiles Questions

How does KAPOW Smiles whiten teeth?

KAPOW! Smiles uses an unique 18% carbamide peroxide formula, the most popular teeth whitening chemical, to help lighten any yellowing and discolouration of your teeth. Our gel works substantially faster than any whitening products you can find in the supermarket.

How does the LED whitening light work?

The blue LED light uses the same technology that dentists use for in-salon whitening. The light works by increasing the oxidation process of the teeth whitening gel which accelerates the teeth whitening process, hence providing quicker results and providing a much safer whitening treatment than using peroxide for extended periods of time.

How often should I use my kit?

When you first start using the KAPOW! Smiles whitening kit, we recommend applying the whitening gel for 45 minutes, once per day, for 7 days. Once you have reached your desired shade of whiteness you can then lower the frequency of treatment to be whenever you feel you need a top up.

    How long do results last?

How long your teeth will remain white for depends on your lifestyle choices as dietary habits can cause your teeth to stain more quickly. If you smoke, drink coffee, soft drinks and red wine your teeth will stain quicker. Generally your teeth will remain whiter for a number of years and the occasional top up will be enough to keep them at their whitest. Once you have initially whitened your teeth, maintaining the whiteness is easy.

What is the shelf life of the whitening gel?

Once produced, our whitening gel has a shelf life of 2 years, but for best results we recommend your whitening gel be used within the first 12 months from date of purchase.

    How quickly does it work?

Everyone's teeth will whiten at a different rate but most people should start to see whiter teeth after only 2 – 3 applications. After about one week (depending on how stained and yellow your teeth were) you will notice a significant change.

How does the KAPOW! Guarantee work?

Our kit's contain a powerful and unique 18% carbamide peroxide teeth whitening gel formula which is the exact same strength which many dentists will provide in their take home kits. For products of this strength, it's actually not possible for the gel not to work. The big majority of people will start to see a change in whiteness within a few days and then the best results after a full treatment (9 applications). However, the difficulty is everyone's teeth does whiten at a different pace and some people's teeth are more stubborn and might need extra treatments. Our guarantee is, if after a completion of a full treatment you have not seen at least a couple shades difference, we will send you a refill gel pack (additional 9 treatments) absolutely free - which will be certain to do the job!
